Where is the "On" Switch (and what to do when you can't find it)

Yesterday, I stared at a blank wall for twenty minutes.

I wasn't meditating. I wasn't visualizing my five-year business plan. I was just profoundly, aggressively uninspired. To be fair, I wasn't the only one. My dog was sitting right next to me, intensely tracking the wall, waiting for a stray glimmer of light or a shadow to chase. At least she had a goal. I was just blank.

We live in a culture that treats ambition like a constant, roaring bonfire. We are told to grind, to manifest, to "hustle harder." But let’s be real: some days, the bonfire is a single, sad, smoking ember.

My 11-year-old daughter, Evie, walked into the studio during my staring contest with the drywall, took one look at my face, smirked, and just shook her head. It’s comforting to know that even when my inner light is dim, her ability to judge my vibe remains completely intact (she's a gem, and my #1 fan, for the record).

When the drive to create or build vanishes, our immediate reaction is usually panic. We think, “Well, this is it. The spark is gone forever.” In those moments, I have to channel my grandma. Whenever things went sideways or ground to a sudden halt, she would shrug and say, "It is what it is." It’s a beautifully unbothered phrase. It doesn't mean you give up; it just means you stop fighting reality. Right now, the tank is empty. It is what it is.

Yelling at an empty battery doesn't charge it. So, what do we actually do on the days when it's hard to keep things going? Here are a few entirely realistic, non-toxic-positivity strategies that help me through:

Lower the bar to the floor.

If you can't create a masterpiece today, just tidy one shelf. Clear one email. Make the hurdle so incredibly low that you can practically trip over it and still call it a win.

           Change your sensory input.

If I’m stuck, no amount of staring will fix it (even if the dog disagrees). Walk outside without your phone. Drink freezing cold water. Shock your brain out of its rut.

           Borrow someone else’s spark.

When my own inner light is dim, I look for external sources. Read a chapter of a book by someone you admire. Watch a documentary about a chef, an athlete, or a gardener. Seeing their love for their craft reminds you of yours.

           Give yourself permission to stall.

If your body and mind are refusing to cooperate, they might just be desperately begging for a break. Rest is an active part of the creative process, not the enemy of it.

Ambition will come back. It always does. It’s just waiting for you to stop pushing so hard so it can sneak back in through the side door. Until then, channel my grandma, embrace the "it is what it is" energy, and give yourself a little grace.

          Warmth & light,

When I met Shannon, I could instantly feel the warmth of her glow. She carries the kind of inner light that comes from knowing exactly who you are and what matters.

Growing up, her parents were divorced, and she watched her single mom navigate the world with incredible strength. It was a beautiful lesson in independence, but it also made Shannon realize that she didn’t want to be so self-reliant that she locked out companionship. She wanted to build a life with someone who would be there–always.

That longing for a steady bond, naturally carried over into her journey as a parent. To Shannon, being deeply woven into the lives of her kids, was nonnegotiable. She commits herself to being fully present, no matter what. Shannon’s beauty is found in her quiet, fierce reliability—a promise that ensures her kids always know they have a safe place to land.

Her radiance doesn’t come from anything she owns, but from the invisible things she nurtures every day—her relationship with herself, her deep devotion to others, and a quiet, enduring faith that keeps her light burning steady and bright.

I was completely inspired by Shannon’s devotion to her family and friends. In our world today, the kind of dedication that she has, seems harder to find than ever before. She is proof that pure-hearted intentions and compassionate understanding still exist.

Shannon moves through the world living by a simple truth:

your life is what you make it.

Dianne: The Rhythm of Quiet Love

Dianne is one of those people who instantly warms your spirit.

Her love creeps in and quietly embraces you when you need it most. Her smile is soft, and gentle; it reminds me of what it feels like to snuggle under a warm blanket on a rainy day, or that “first-sip-feeling” of a freshly-brewed cup of hot tea.

I can remember meeting her for the first time. I instantly wondered how she managed to accomplish everything that she does; it’s almost like she had a certain “super power” that propelled her forward, landing her ahead of the rest of the world.

Dianne’s whole life has been a quiet dedication to the people she loves. Being the oldest of eight kids meant she had to step up as a caregiver pretty early on—sometimes whether she wanted to or not. Talking to her, it’s obvious that she doesn’t hold bitterness toward her past, but rather, embraces it, and recognizes the beauty that came from her journey. Those chaotic early days paved the way for her to be a good mom to three truly amazing and unique kids of her own, who are now out in the world living their own lives.

These days, Dianne’s passion is with her church, where she works in the music department as the Administrator and magical “doer-of-all-things”. She pours her heart into sustaining the pieces that make a choir of over 100 people stick together. Sitting in the quiet moments between choir rehearsals, she often finds herself looking back at the long, winding road that brought her here. Roping in the chaos, leading the way as she’s always done, and managing to take a “Holy Pause” to soak up the joy that music unloads for her. Singing in two different choirs throughout the year isn’t just a hobby; it’s a form of prayer, a way she recharges her spirit and sits with her faith.

I’ve realized that the light within her isn’t a static thing; it is a living, breathing part of who she is. It is the color of twilight after a long, fulfilling day—a gentle, rolling wave that keeps her grounded when life gets loud, and Dianne knows that light is meant to be shared, not hoarded.

I asked her what advice she’d give the world, and she responded by saying, “Slow down. Realize that there is good in the world, and share that good and "light" with those around you.” Dianne’s words are a beautiful reminder that our own light only burns brighter when we live with intent, find the goodness in the world, and freely pass it along.

Thank you, Dianne, for sharing your inner light with the world.

          What does Dianne's painting reflect?

This painting is a visual reflection of Dianne’s beautiful spirit, painted with peace and warmth at the center. The soft, luminous washes of her favorite purples and blues rise gracefully from the bottom, carrying an uplifting energy upward. From above, a warm, golden glow breaks through the atmosphere, representing the radiant shine of her unique inner light. This gentle illumination pours down directly upon the delicate, clustered choir below, enveloping them in warmth, grace, and harmony.

Let’s be honest for a second. Starting a blog in 2026 feels a bit like showing up to a party where everyone is already doing the latest dance trend, and you’re just trying not to trip over the rug. But here we are. Welcome to

          The Luminary.

When I named my business One Light Studio, it wasn’t because I have a flawless, perfectly curated vision. You won't find highly staged, cinematic videos here where everything looks immaculate and effortless. My reality is much more human. Most days, it’s simply about chasing that one good stream of light through the studio window, pouring a fresh cup of coffee, and finding the quiet beauty in the middle of a busy workday.

This space is going to be our digital living room. I want to give you a raw, organic look at what actually happens here—not just the finished products, but the heartbeat behind them. I’ll be sharing original writings, studio happenings, and life as it comes. More than anything, I want this to be a space that uplifts you. Through my latest passion, the Inner Light Project, I hope to share stories and insights that spark a little bit of warmth and inspiration in your own daily routine.
